Word Study |
Each week we will focus on studying different components of words. We will work on learning phonics and spelling strategies, how words work, how to make changes to a word to make a new word, how to apply grammatical rules to words, how to break words apart and blend words together, how to find little words inside of bigger words and how to be great word detectives. |
High Frequency
Words: Each week we will practice reading and writing high
frequency words: words that are frequently read or written. By the
end of second grade, the Brookings School District expects second grade
students to be able to read and write (spell correctly) the first 175
high frequency words from the Fountas & Pinnell Assessment System.
We will be focusing on learning the 100 second grade words. The word lists are available below. Click on the icons for the corresponding word lists: |
On Fridays students will take home a
worksheet for them to list words that use the spelling strategy for the
next week, to be returned to school on Monday. We will
then create a word list together that uses the specified skill of the week
using the lists of words the students have generated.
Students will write our five high frequency words for the week and
the words from the list we create in their assignment planners to study
at home. The goal is for them to be able to apply these new words and
strategies in their every day writing. On Fridays, they will take an
assessment over their Word Study skill of the week and their High
Frequency Words for the week. (Subject to change when we have Mondays/Fridays off.) |
